- From Breadboard to Board: Planning a PCB Project
Define board size, connectors, mounting and component choices before drawing. · Lab: Write a one-page board specification for your sensor node. - Schematic Capture in KiCad
Place symbols, wire nets and use labels and power symbols for a readable schematic. · Lab: Draw the schematic of a microcontroller sensor node with regulator and programming header. - Symbols, Footprints and Reading Package Drawings
Match each symbol to the right footprint and create a custom one from a drawing. · Lab: Create a footprint for a connector from its mechanical drawing and verify it on a 1:1 print. - Electrical Rules Check and Designing for Debugging
Clear rule violations and add test points, indicator LEDs and jumpers. · Lab: Run the check, fix all issues and add five test points. - Component Placement and Board Outline
Arrange parts by signal flow, keep decoupling close and define outline and mounting holes. · Lab: Place all components of your board and review it in the 3D viewer. - Routing Traces, Widths, Vias and Ground Pours
Route power and signals with suitable widths and a solid ground reference. · Lab: Route the board completely with a ground pour on both layers. - Design Rules Check, Gerber Files and Ordering Boards
Verify against manufacturer capabilities and export a correct fabrication package. · Lab: Run the check, export Gerber and drill files and inspect them in a viewer. - Through-Hole Assembly and Inspecting Joints
Assemble in a sensible order and judge joint quality under magnification. · Lab: Complete a through-hole kit and rework any doubtful joints. - SMD Soldering with Iron, Paste and Hot Air
Solder chip components, small-outline ICs and fine-pitch parts and remove bridges. · Lab: Complete an SMD practice kit using both iron and hot air. - Board Bring-Up: Power First, Then One Block at a Time
Test a new board safely with current limiting and staged checks. · Lab: Bring up your assembled board following a written checklist and record all measurements.
Abschlussprojekt
Your own two-layer sensor node board designed in KiCad, ordered, hand-assembled with SMD parts and verified with a bring-up report.
