- Compute Module 4 and 5: Variants and Trade-Offs
Choose a module by memory, eMMC, wireless and availability. · Lab: Select a module variant for three product briefs and justify each choice. - Flashing eMMC with rpiboot
Put a module into USB boot mode and write an image to its eMMC. · Lab: Flash Bookworm to eMMC from another computer and boot the module on the IO board. - Learning from the Reference IO Board Schematic
Read a reference design and identify what your product needs from it. · Lab: Mark up the reference schematic: keep, change or delete for each sheet. - Schematic Capture for a Minimal Carrier in KiCad
Draw a carrier with power, USB, Ethernet, debug UART and a GPIO header. · Lab: Capture the schematic for a minimal carrier and pass the electrical rules check. - Power Tree Design: Input Protection, Regulators and Sequencing
Plan rails, currents, protection and power-up behaviour. · Lab: Draw a power tree from a 12 to 24 V input to every rail with current budgets and fusing. - Routing High-Speed Pairs: USB, HDMI, PCIe and Ethernet
Apply impedance, length-matching and return-path rules. · Lab: Define stack-up and differential pair rules and route one USB pair and one PCIe lane. - Device Tree and config.txt for a Custom Carrier
Describe your board's peripherals so the kernel configures them. · Lab: Write an overlay that enables your carrier's UART, I2C devices and status LEDs. - Antennas, RTC Backup and Wireless Options on Modules
Select internal or external antennas and plan timekeeping. · Lab: Switch the module to its external antenna and compare signal strength inside a metal case. - Board Bring-Up: A Step-by-Step Power-On Plan
Power a new board in stages without destroying it. · Lab: Write a bring-up checklist and run it on the IO board using a current-limited supply. - Design for Manufacture, Test Points and Assembly Files
Prepare fabrication outputs and make the board testable. · Lab: Generate Gerbers, a bill of materials and placement files and review them against an assembler's rules.
Abschlussprojekt
A Compute Module running from eMMC on a development carrier, plus a complete design package for your own minimal carrier: schematic, power tree, device tree changes, bring-up plan and manufacturing files.
